Introduction

Where the earth heals

Tuzlata is a unique natural complex just 4 kilometres east of Balchik. This corner, where land meets the sea, has been drawing visitors for healing since the end of the 19th century.

Tuzlata is not a typical resort — the absence of mass tourism keeps its authenticity. Among the quiet sand dunes and the calm waters of the liman lies one of the few preserved natural healing areas in Europe.

The healing lake

The liman among the dunes

The heart of the area is a coastal liman separated from the Black Sea by sand dunes. The lake covers about 100 decares and is only 0.8 metres deep at most — ideal conditions for the formation of healing mud.

The salinity of the water varies widely — from 28‰ in the less salty sections to 160‰ in the most concentrated zones, making the lake comparable in properties to the Dead Sea.

The healing mud

Tuzlata's black gold

The bottom of the liman is covered with healing mud — a dark brown to black substance with the characteristic smell of hydrogen sulphide. Total reserves are estimated at about 38,000 tonnes.

Most impressive of all, the mud is constantly growing — about 200 tonnes of new material, or 5–6 millimetres, are added every year. The mud is rich in mineral salts, sulphur compounds and bioactive substances that stimulate blood circulation and ease tissue regeneration.

Healing properties

Nature, proven since 1883

The first documented use of Tuzlata's healing properties dates to 1883, when the Russian doctor Ignatov made the first systematic observations of the effects of the mud and mineral water.

The combination of healing mud, mineral water and sea climate creates a unique therapeutic environment. The liman's mineral water is lightly mineralised and reaches 33°C — one of the warmest natural mineral waters on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Getting there

Four kilometres from Balchik

Tuzlata is reached by car or bicycle from Balchik — there is no regular public transport, which helps the place keep its peace. The road runs along the coastline.

Access is free, with no entrance fees. Visit the area in the earlier hours of the day, when temperatures are pleasant and the sun is not too strong.

☀ Tip

Bring flip-flops for the mud baths and a towel — after the mud, wash in the liman's mineral water or in the sea.
