Introduction

The garden by the beach

Albena is one of the most prestigious resorts on the North Black Sea Coast, set between lush forest and a wide sandy beach at the mouth of the Batova River. Since it opened in 1969 the resort has been designed as a garden city — no building rises above the treetops.

The resort lies about 12 kilometres from Balchik and 40 from Varna. Its unique natural setting — sea, beach and longoz forest — creates an exceptionally favourable microclimate for rest and recovery all year round.

The beach and nature

Two kilometres of golden sand

Albena's beach is about 2 kilometres long and holds the prestigious 'Blue Flag' certificate for clean water and quality. The beach is wide, well kept and suitable for families with children.

Behind the beach rises the Baltata reserve — a rare longoz (flooded) forest of 205.6 hectares, protected since 1978. It is one of the last longoz habitats in Bulgaria, found in few places in the world.

Baltata reserve

The longoz forest of Batova

The reserve lies at the mouth of the Batova River and is home to rare plant and animal species. Dense vegetation of vines, maple, elm and oak keeps it cool even on the hottest days, and walking and cycling trails lead to viewing platforms.

The area is great for birdwatching — many species of wetland forest are found exactly here. A walk through Baltata is a must for a full Albena holiday.

☀ Tip

Early morning is the best time for a walk in the reserve — it's cool, the trails are almost empty and the birds are at their most active.

Activities

What to do in Albena

Albena is known for its sports and family activities. It hosts one of the biggest water parks on the Black Sea coast, an international-standard tennis centre and Bulgaria's first chess academy, opened by Anatoly Karpov.

Alongside water sports, horse riding and a go-kart track, the resort hosts international events — from the media festival to the Albena Rally.

Albena as a base

Albena's location makes it an ideal base for day trips. The Palace and Botanical Garden in Balchik are 9.5 kilometres away, Kavarna and Cape Kaliakra 20, and Shumen with the Madara Rider is an hour's drive.

☀ Tip

A taxi or an organised excursion to Balchik and Kaliakra is the easiest way to explore the area without worrying about driving.
